This is a protostar, a collection of dust and gas in space. As a quick google search will tell you, this phase (the protostellar phase) is an early phase in the creation of a star.
Fun fact: The chemical composition of the sun is presumed to be the composition of the solar nebula from which it was formed. The sun is composed of hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and neon. The four main elements present in life are hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Cool, right?
Today our professor brought in some extraterrestrial “rocks” for us to touch and examine. One of them was a meteor, and it’s exterior would lead you to believe it was a rock. It was not. It was actually made of iron. The iron had cooled very slowly, 1 degree every… Ok, I can’t remember. Some ridiculous number of years. One thousand, thousands, maybe more. Such slow cooling causes metal to crystallize, which looks very cool.
The other rock that I got to hold was a big chunk of…… OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. It was a rock that contained all the elements present in our sun, but none of them differentiated, so it’s just a freaking…rock. Mix up the elements that make up the sun, let them cool in a pan that can withstand very hot temperatures, and eventually you will have one of these rocks. That statement is absolutely untrue. But you get the idea.
We briefly discussed meteor swords. I think you could definitely slay a dragon with one, if there were dragons around to slay. For the record, I in know way condone dragon slaying. I just think this is BAD ASS. I want weapons made from meteor metal.
